Academic Pandemic

March 12, 2021

NYU, UCLA, USC, Redlands and many other colleges are planning to bring students back to their campuses for mostly in-person classes for the Fall of 2021.

The areas that were hit harder by the pandemic who are planning to return back to somewhat semblances of normal are an indication of what other colleges across the nation may also be planning.

In Arizona, ASU, GCU, NAU and UofA are also planning to return to classes fully in person in the Fall of 2021. Other Arizona colleges may be planning similar in-person classes.

Seattle University in the pacific northwest, also plans “to return to a primarily in-person mode for both instruction and the student experience.”

New safety requirements will be posted by each of the colleges as they move into dorms, attend classes, and socialize on colleges campuses across the US.

This is good news for students.

For those students that will be starting or returning to college this fall, remember to develop rapport with the professors as this can lead to departmental scholarships, internships and potentially career opportunities.

Virtual Volunteer and Make a Real Impact

February 22, 2021

In the next several years (Class of 2021, Class of 2022, Class of 2023, and Class of 2024) as students apply to colleges, many students will have large gaping blackhole in their resume beginning in March of 2020. This is due to clubs, organizations and activities being cancelled because of the pandemic.

On the college application is a section for you to showcase your activities and your high school resume.

When colleges ask that important question, “What activities, clubs, hobbies and volunteer stuff did you do?” Many students will answer “Nothing because everything was cancelled”.

If you are considering a selective college or you would like to earn a leadership scholarship or volunteer scholarship, you must do something.

When I was in college, one of my dormmates would say “In order to do something, you must do something.” It was his attempt at being philosophical. Yet, his statement is true.

The answer is Virtual Volunteer.

Showing the college that you took initiative, have personal drive, and did something even though obstacles were present, is impressive. And you might get a scholarship from the college for taking doing these things.

If you’re looking for a sense of purpose, or just want something to do, consider online volunteering to fill that blackhole void.

Volunteering online lets you donate your virtual time to a cause that matters, which means you can make a difference even if you can’t physically go somewhere to volunteer.

It is important to show the college that you have good grades and good test scores (SAT/ACT). It is equally important and possibly more important in this day and age to show the colleges that you are driven and took the initiative and did something.

It is also important to select activities (virtual and real) that will make you stand out from the rest of the applicant pool. “Be Intentional” with your virtual volunteer activities.

Do you need help choosing activities that will make you stand out? Give us a call 1-888-237-208 x2.

Emergency Relief for Federal Student Loans EXTENDED!

February 2, 2021

The federal government just announced (2/1/2021) an extension to the currently deferred federal student loans.

“Federal student loan repayment suspension and 0% interest rate have been extended through at least Sept. 30, 2021.”

Back in March 2020, the federal government began providing the temporary relief on ED-owned federal student loans: suspension of loan payments, stopped collections on defaulted loans, and a 0% interest rate.

Basically this means, if you have a federal student loan owned by the ED, no interest will accumulate during the deferral period and the current interest rate is temporarily set to zero % and no payments are required during the deferral period.

There are strategic reasons to take out federal student loans and this is currently one of the reasons.

Let’s say you hand the money to pay for college but you decided to take out a federal student loan anyway. You could take the money that you were going to pay for college and put it into an interest-bearing account. Even at 1% you could be better off earning a little interest than not. Then when the loan becomes due, pay off the loan and keep the interest. (This is not financial advice; it is just an idea.)

If you have a federal student loan you can check your status here https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/sign-in/landing. You will need your FSA ID to login.

If you have a federal student loan, more than likely you will be contact by a third party to consolidate your federal student loans. If one consolidated the federal student loans with a third party, those loans are NOT eligible for the deferred COVID Emergency Relief program.

There is no fee for the payment suspension or 0% interest rate. Your student loan servicer provides free help with your questions or concerns about your loan payments. Beware of scammers.

If you have questions on any of these federal student loans or would like to discuss some strategic planning to get into college, get scholarships and grants and or plan on how to best pay for college, please contact me.

SAT Subject Tests Discontinued

January 20, 2021

The College Board announced today that it has eliminated all Subject Tests and will do away with the optional SAT essay. Now more than EVER AP test scores, ACT/SAT test scores and grades will matter in admissions. After these data points it’s all about your application and how you showcase yourself to  admissions officers.

SAT Subject Tests are college admission exams on specific subjects. The AP exams are similar and will replace the SAT Subjects Tests. (AP Advanced Placement).

This is actually good news. Students can now focus on getting strong AP grades and strong AP test scores and not have to worry about another test.

Here are the comments from College Board.

1. We're discontinuing SAT Subject Tests.

The expanded reach of AP® and its widespread availability for low-income students and students of color mean the SAT Subject Tests™ are no longer necessary for students to show what they know. AP provides students rich and varied opportunities to showcase their knowledge and skills through college-level coursework. Courses like AP Computer Science Principles and AP Capstone™ provide the type of hands-on learning experiences and practical, real-world work that colleges want to see from students.

We'll no longer offer the SAT Subject Tests in the U.S. Students in the U.S. will automatically have their registrations canceled and receive a refund. Because SAT Subject Tests are used internationally for a wider variety of purposes, we'll provide two more administrations in May and June of 2021 for students in international locations.

We've contacted our member colleges, and they'll decide whether and how to consider SAT Subject Test scores from students who have them. Students should check colleges' websites for the most up-to-date information on their application policies.

2. We're discontinuing the optional SAT Essay.

This decision recognizes that there are other ways for students to demonstrate their mastery of essay writing. At the same time, writing remains essential to college readiness, and the SAT will continue to measure writing and editing skills. The tasks on the SAT Reading and Writing and Language tests are among the most effective and predictive parts of the SAT. Students can still take the SAT with Essay through the June 2021 SAT administration.

After June 2021, we'll continue to provide the essay only in states where it's required for SAT School Day administrations for accountability purposes. Students who are registered for the SAT with Essay this spring can cancel the Essay portion at any time, free of charge.

It is important to take some AP classes in high school. If your high school does not offer AP classes or if you have any questions about this and would like to create a customized game plan as you finish up this semester, please contact me.

Federal Student Loans

April 27, 2020

The maximum amount of federal student loans that are offered to a college freshman is $5,500. (There are some exceptions to the maximum amount which is based on extreme need.) The maximum amount of loans offered each year goes up. The maximum amount of federal student loans that a undergraduate college student can take out is $27,000.

Annual Maximum Loan Limits
Grade LevelDependent Students
Freshman: 0 – 29 credit hours$5,500 (no more than $3,500 subsidized)
Sophomore: 30 – 59 credit hours$6,500 (no more than $4,500 subsidized)
Junior/Senior: 60+ credit hours$7,500 (no more than $5,500 subsidized)

There are two types of federal student loans that are offered, Subsidized and Unsubsidized. Both of these loans are deferred (no payment is required) during the college years as long as the student is a full time student. Full time student means the student takes 12 credit hours (or more) of classes per semester. (Please note that if a student takes 12 credit hours per semester, this student will NOT graduate in four years.  A student with 16 to 18 credit hours will typically graduate in four years or less.)

Federal student loans that are “unsubsidized’ are loans that will accrue interest during the deferral period. Meaning, if one takes a federal unsubsidized student loan for $1,000, at the end of the deferral period the amount owed would be $1000 plus the interest that accrued. If the unsubsidized loan is not paid off at the end of the deferral period interest will continue to accrue.

Federal student loans that are “subsidized’ are loans that will NOT accrue interest during the deferral period. Meaning, if one takes a federal subsidized student loan for $1,000, at the end of the deferral period the amount owed would be $1000. Once the deferral period ends if the subsidized loan is not paid off, interest will start to accrue.

If a student accepts the federal student loan(s), then it is the responsibility of the student to pay off these loans, not the parent. Parents can choose to help pay off the federal student loan, however parent are not responsible for these loans.

It is up to the college’s discression to offer federal subsidized student loans.

The federal Parent PLUS loan is offered to the parent to cover the gap of the cost of the college. There is no maximum amount of federal Parent PLUS loans, except for the total cost of the college. It is not unusual for some colleges to offer to the parent a federal Parent PLUS loan for $40,000, $50,000 and even $70,000 or more for one year of college.

Parents can choose to accept or decline the federal Parent PLUS loan. Parents can also choose to accept a portion of the federal Parent PLUS loan. For example if the parent was offered $30,000 in the federal Parent PLUS loan, the parent could accept only $20,000 or $10,000 or any amount less than the maxiumum offered.

The federal Parent PLUS loan is not automatically deferred. However you can ask them to defer payments for the federal Parent PLUS loan. Interest will accrue once the funds have been distributed and interest will continue to accrue durring the life of this loan.

If a parent accepts the federal Parent PLUS loan, then it is the responsibility of the parent to pay off these loans, not the student. The student can choose to help pay off the federal Parent PLUS loan, however student is not responsible for these loans.

Loans are NOT free money. Loans must be paid back.

Testing Strategies for Younger Students

April 8, 2020

Many times, I will get the response “I didn’t know that my 6th grade student could take the SAT” or “I thought only high school students could take the SAT and ACT test.”

There are no grade restrictions or age restrictions for taking the SAT and ACT tests. (Parents, you could take the test with your student, if you wanted…)

If your student is younger than 13, then parents are required to fill out a special form in order to sit for the test. If the student is age 13 or above, then students (with the parents help) can fill out the online reservation forms. There is a strategic time of the year to take these tests which is typically December -February.

  • Why should you and your student consider taking the test in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade?
The primary reason is to get on the college’s radar early.

A while back I had a conversation with Alex and his parents. Alex was a junior in high school. After a few questions, I found out that Alex had a younger brother, Noah, who was in 7th grade at the time. I asked if they heard about these programs for middle school and junior high school students. They had not. After explaining how the program works and why they should consider it. They decided to let their 7th grader Noah, sit and take the SAT test.

Alex, the older brother was admitted to college and got a nice scholarship package. However, because we had more time and started early the results were much better for the younger student. When Noah applied to colleges and was admitted, his results were much stronger as he was sitting on THREE FULL RIDE Scholarships in his senior year of high school. Because he took the test early and did okay on the test, not great, that gave him a confidence boost that carried over into high school. He got on the college’s radar early, did his job with getting great grades and followed AZCollegePlanning.com’s program. This is how he earned those amazing scholarship packages.

If your student is a good academic student and is a 6th, 7th or 8th grade student, consider taking the SAT or ACT test. The student doesn’t have to do great on the test, he/she just needs to do well in one section.

  • Should your student prep before taking these tests?
The answer is absolutely YES. Getting the minimum score to get on the college’s radar early is one of the keys to open the doors to obtaining the coveted Full-Ride Scholarship. We have a program to help student earn the scores needed.

If you would like to learn more about this, about taking the tests early and about our programs please contact us at 1-888-237-2087 x2. Also check out the website www.AZCollegePlanning.com for more information.

Did you know that Arizona State University starts tracking students as early at 2nd grade? Yes, they have programs for 2nd grade students.

The earlier you start on this process, the better and easier to obtain great results.
